Need

We All Need Access

But half the world has no way to connect. OneWeb is on a mission to create an affordable global gateway.
Because the most important elements in our lives depend on communication.

  • Education

Knowledge gives people the tools to solve their own problems.

  • Creativity

The free flow of ideas unites people, creates jobs and stimulates economic growth.

  • Relief

In emergency, disaster or humanitarian crisis the ability to communicate saves lives.

  • Equality

Everyone deserves the same advantages. It’s time to even things out.

Solution

Satellites Make It All Possible

  • Constellation of satellites

648 satellites circling the earth will enable affordable access.

OneWeb’s satellites are closer to the earth allowing for better web performance.

  • Coverage

OneWeb’s constellation of satellites logically interlock with each other to create a coverage footprint over the entire planet.

  • User terminals

Small, low-cost user terminals talk to the satellites in the sky, and emit LTE, 3G and WiFi to the surrounding areas, providing high-speed access for everyone.

Use

Assured Global Communications

OneWeb can address the most demanding global connectivity challenges and sudden infrastructure crises. Those affected by hurricanes, earthquakes and refugee situations are often abruptly without infrastructure — OneWeb will bridge these gaps providing instantly deployable connectivity or long-term access solutions.

Low Latency Broadband At 30,000 Ft

OneWeb is expanding in-flight connectivity. Our system will provide business jet, commercial airline and military aviation customers with airtime services that will include weather, navigation and health monitoring of the aircraft. Together we can bring the benefits of affordable, low‑latency Internet to 30,000 ft.

Vehicle Cell Network For First Responders

The world’s only mobile, mobile network. Wherever you go, your mobile network will follow you with our patented mobile terminal. It mounts to the top of any emergency vehicle, providing a 200m LTE coverage circle when towers aren’t available. Our terminal senses whether your operator has coverage and, when they don’t, instantly makes their mobile network available. We can provide instantly deployable connectivity or long-term access solutions to those affected by hurricanes, earthquakes and refugee situations, extending the operator's network and assuring 4G quality Internet and voice for first responders, humanitarian workers and medical personnel where and when they need it most.

Direct To Home, School Or Health Center

Our network is everyone’s network. Our system can provide access to health centers, schools, libraries, and homes through our low cost user terminal, ensuring relief to communities in need, tools to drive education, access to knowledge, and opportunities for local businesses. It’s all part of our mission to connect the world.

Rural Coverage For Mobile Operators

OneWeb is an extension of existing networks, not a replacement. Much of the world is already covered by ISPs and mobile operators’ high capacity networks. Our system is designed to extend these networks into rural areas and create affordable connectivity for all. Our small cell terminals and core network will be fully 3GPP compatible, so partner operators will be able to use our infrastructure with their current customers, devices and billing systems. Our terminals will connect to devices either on unlicensed frequencies, or using our partner operators’ frequencies to provide better coverage for their customers.

Building A Neutral Network

OneWeb’s architecture will provide layer 2 and layer 3 services that can be used by any ISP or telecommunication provider to extend any network. Our small cell terminals and core network will be fully 3GPP compatible, allowing OneWeb to work together with providers in any regulatory environment, anywhere in the world.

Technology

How Micro Satellites Are Made

Mass production and satellites have never been used in the same sentence. Each satellite used to be handcrafted by hundreds of engineers. Until now. OneWeb has changed things. Today, satellites can be made in the same way high quality medical and avionics equipment are.

OneWeb Satellites:
  • Less components
  • Lighter weight
  • Easier to manufacture
  • Cheaper to launch

OneWeb's User Terminals

User terminals provide high-speed connectivity with no change in latency during satellite handovers to ensure excellent voice quality, gaming and web experience. Our patent‑pending terminals can be self-installed. They are small, affordable and so efficient they can operate with optionally included solar panels, battery packs, and WiFi/LTE/3G and 2G radios to provide coverage directly to cell phones, tablets and laptops.

Progressive Pitch

Our vision is shared and supported by the United Nations International Telecommunications Union (ITU). In 1997, the ITU recognized the potential disparity in connectivity access and prioritized specific global spectrum to connect the world. This is the only spectrum of its kind and OneWeb’s license to utilize this capacity is a globally unique position. The priority spectrum allocated by the ITU came with a significant constraint: Our use of the spectrum must not cause interference with the GEO satellites. To accomplish this, we developed a key enabling technology we call “Progressive Pitch™”. This patent pending technology allows us to unlock the spectrum in the most efficient way by gradually and slightly tilting our satellites as they approach the equator to make sure we never cause, or receive, interference.

Responsible Use Of Space

Global Citizenship in Space and on Earth

OneWeb understands space is a shared, natural resource that must be protected like any other. We are passionate about preventing debris creation, respecting existing space assets, and ensuring a safe and sustainable space (and Earth!) environment for the future.

On Board Propulsion and State of the Art Positioning

With state‑of‑the‑art onboard GPS sensors and ground-tracking measurements, OneWeb satellites know their position within meters.

We’ve chosen clean orbits with minimal debris and our satellites, using their on-board propulsion systems are capable of performing maneuvers to steer clear of anything that may come our way.

End of Life Disposal

When a OneWeb satellite nears the end of its intended service life, it will de-orbit automatically, ensuring that the space around our planet remains free and clear for future generations.

Rockwell Collins Teams With OneWeb to Provide Unprecedented Connectivity to Aviation

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (BUSINESS WIRE) — Rockwell Collins has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with OneWeb Ltd. to be the exclusive developer and provider of satellite communication (SATCOM) terminals for OneWeb’s global aviation high-speed broadband service. Rockwell Collins will also be an authorized Value Added Reseller (VAR) of OneWeb connectivity services.

“This collaboration is a significant next step in our information management and connectivity journey,” said Kent Statler, executive vice president and chief operating officer, Commercial Systems for Rockwell Collins. “By working with OneWeb to bring unprecedented bandwidth and connectivity speed to the aviation industry, we’re strategically positioned to rapidly change the way airlines operate and to provide passengers with a connected experience that mirrors their daily lives.”

Under the agreement, OneWeb will team with Rockwell Collins to develop and certify the SATCOM terminals, which will utilize electronically scanned array (ESA) antenna technology developed by Rockwell Collins’ Advanced Technology Center. Using rapid beam movement and reconfigurable antenna patterns, ESA antennas provide high levels of performance to ensure that aircraft stay connected during flight.

“The antenna is a fraction of the size and weight of a traditional airborne SATCOM antenna, which means significant long-term cost savings for airlines from reduced fuel consumption,” said John Borghese, vice president, Advanced Technology Center for Rockwell Collins. “In addition, the unique design and scalability of our Ku-band ESA technology matched with the OneWeb network opens up possibilities to enable connectivity in other markets beyond aerospace.”

OneWeb is building a constellation of more than 600 satellites that, when launched, will be the largest telecommunications constellation in orbit, providing approximately 10 terabits per second of low-latency, high-speed broadband to people around the globe.

Honeywell, OneWeb partner to offer satellite Internet to aircraft

(Reuters) - Honeywell International Inc said on Monday it has teamed up with satellite Internet startup OneWeb Ltd to expand the high-speed data services it offers to aircraft.

OneWeb, whose investors include Richard Branson's Virgin Group and Qualcomm Inc, plans to build a network of 648 low-orbit satellites capable of beaming fast Internet around the world starting in 2019.

Honeywell will use OneWeb's bandwidth to provide aircraft services such as streaming maintenance data from engines and other equipment to the ground, transmitting weather and navigation data to pilots and supplying fast Internet connections to passengers. The system also could stream black box flight data or cockpit video, ideas regulators are discussing, Honeywell said.

Honeywell already supplies some services through satellite providers such as Iridium Communications Inc and Inmarsat Plc. But the faster speeds and low latency that OneWeb promises - at least 50 megabits per second per aircraft, and possibly much more - could in theory increase Honeywell's market by three to five times, Carl Esposito, vice president of marketing and product management at Honeywell Aerospace, said in an interview.

"It's a big opportunity," he said. Because of the high bandwidth, "it really is transformational across the entire aircraft."

The deal does not rule out or alter other partnerships.

"It is very complementary to the solutions we're already providing," he said.

Honeywell will also sell equipment that connects the aircraft to the satellite.

Honeywell says the agreement will allow it to target a wider range of aircraft, including smaller business and military planes, along with commercial jetliners.

OneWeb says its system will be capable of providing 10 terabits of data per second, and much of that bandwidth will go to ground-based users in developing countries seeking Internet access. Aircraft add another, potentially lucrative market, although the prices of OneWeb and Honeywell's services have not been set.

OneWeb does not see a threat from other technology companies that provide global broadband such as Facebook Inc, Google Inc and SpaceX.

"There's an insane appetite for bandwidth," Chief Executive Officer Greg Wyler said. "We're going to make a dent in it with our system. But we're not going to complete it."

OneWeb plans to start launching its small satellites in 2017, placing them about 750 miles above Earth.
